- Welcome to the Mid Hants Railway ?Watercress Line?, where you can experience more than just a train ride at Hampshire's heritage railway!
The railway looks spectacular through every season, from the delightful bluebells in spring, golden summer fields, the glorious colours of autumn and magical frosts in winter. From the pretty Georgian town of New Alresford with its bustling station through to the restful open spaces and famous topiary at Ropley, home to our Loco Sheds; then up the steep climb to the picturesque country station at Medstead & Four Marks, the highest station in the South of England, and then down into the busy market town of Alton - each station has a distinct character that is a delight to explore.
The standard fare gives you unlimited all day travel so that you can explore the stations at your leisure. You can even take a stroll around Alton or New Alresford towns and re-enter on the same travel ticket, so arrive early and enjoy a great day out!
With special events running throughout the year you can meet Ivor the Engine in February, enjoy a ?Day out with Thomas? at Easter and in August, or dress up in your best Halloween costume for Wizard Week in October. We step back in time for War on the Line in June and again for our 1940?s Christmas Leave, or you can simply soak up the sights and smells of steam at one of our Gala events. We celebrate St Georges Day over a weekend in April and we hold the South?s largest Bus Rally at Alton in July. And of course Santa visits us every weekend in December. All this plus we have luxury dining trains and real ale trains regularly throughout the year and of course the ultimate gift ? a driving and firing experience on one of our steam locos!
Saved from extinction in 1973, an enthusiastic band of volunteers raised enough money to reopen part of the line as a visitor attraction in 1977. Today we continue to exist as a not-for-profit organisation, supporting the Mid Hants Railway Preservation Society so that we can provide a fun, nostalgic and educational day out for all ages. Over 400 dedicated volunteers assist a small team of paid staff to run the railway to preserve an important piece of 1940's - 1970's railway heritage for this generation and many more to follow. Whatever you are visiting the railway for, we trust that our friendly staff will ensure that you have an enjoyable and memorable day.
To find out more go to the timetables and events calander for a full list of our opening times. From here you can select our standard travel or the event of your choice.
